Abstract

Gamers and esports athletes face significant physical demands and health risks; however, the current literature on the role of physical therapy for this population remains fragmented and lacks established guidelines. This scoping review aimed to map relevant evidence on the role of physical therapy for gamers and esports athletes, identify the gaps and limitations, and present the population characteristics of included studies. A total of 64 studies from 10 databases were identified, and most originated from the USA, Spain, and Turkey, with cross-sectional studies being the most common. Physical exercise and conditioning were the most common physical therapy approaches, followed by physical therapy assessments and patient education. On the other hand, neck, back, wrist, and hand problems were the primary conditions addressed with increasing amounts of studies in that order. Findings show that physical therapy roles currently center on exercise and education, yet the literature remains fragmented and lacks specialized frameworks. The evidence also highlights a broader range of health concerns beyond musculoskeletal issues, reflecting the complex demands of gaming and esports participation. In conclusion, this scoping review mapped the current body of evidence on the role of physical therapy for gamers and esports athletes, demonstrating its relevance in addressing various health-related concerns. Furthermore, it highlighted notable gaps, variability in study designs, and cohesion within the existing literature, indicating areas for further research in this emerging field.
