Abstract
In the healthcare system, medical professionals are expected to adapt to the continuous changes and innovation in the medical field. As Caballero and Walker (2010) as cited in Lehr (2017) defined work readiness, it is the preparedness of recent graduates who are entering the workforce. The researchers aimed to identify the perceived clinical work readiness of graduates of the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute, where the respondents are from batches 2020, 2021, and 2022. In relation to that, the study primarily focuses on answering if sex and year graduated has an interplay with the work readiness of the target population. To achieve these objectives, the perceived clinical work readiness of batches 2020, 2021, and 2022 were determined using the adopted survey questionnaire from the study of Lehr (2017) containing the three constructs, namely: Foundational Skills, Endeavours, and Applied Skills which were further divided to subcomponents.
Results of the study showed the highest mean was for Foundational Skills construct, where respondents perceived themselves as "Extremely Ready." This could be attributed to constructive criticisms, improved clinical reasoning, and early exposure to diverse settings. The lowest mean was for the Applied Skills construct, where respondents perceived themselves as "Ready." The Endeavours construct also obtained the same mean as Foundational Skills, indicating the graduates' awareness of their capabilities and taking initiative to enhance their skills.
The study found that there were 16 female respondents (72.73%) and 6 male respondents (27.27%), indicating a higher representation of female respondents. Due to the uneven representation of male and female respondents and the limited sample size in the three categories examined, the study lacks sufficient data to determine the clinical work readiness of Physical Therapy graduates in terms of sex. When grouped according to the year graduated, the study's mean scores for batch 2021, 2020, and 2022 were 4.67, 4.50, and 4.46, respectively. However, the low number of respondents affected the targeted sample size, making it challenging to draw definite conclusions. Therefore, interpreting the mean scores should be approached with caution due to the uneven percentage of respondents.
