Abstract

This study aimed to explore the challenges experienced by stroke survivors in community integration (CI) by utilizing a descriptive qualitative design. In-depth interviews were conducted via online platform to gather information from five post-stroke patients with a history of receiving rehabilitative treatment. The researchers utilized a self-generated questionnaire consisting of sets of open- and close-ended inquiries to investigate the challenges in the Cl of stroke survivors, restricting factors that limit their levels of participation in the community, and as well as its effect on their overall quality of life (QOL); the said research tool was validated by three licensed physical therapists who have prior experience in managing stroke patients. The findings revealed that physical limitations, financial struggles, dependence on caregivers, and decreased capability to work are the challenges and as well restricting factors to the decreased levels of Cl among post-stroke; furthermore, these also made a significant impact on the QOL of the participants. Other challenges in Cl include: restricted participation in religious activities, inconvenience of public transportation, visual problems interfering with leisure activities, fear of further physical impairments, poor memory affecting daily living, difficulty in communication, and lack of resources in health and public facilities. It was also discovered that increased emotional sensitivity and perception of other people are significant factors that limit Cl of stroke survivors. These findings offer a significant contribution in the healthcare industry as the results can be utilized in generating strategies that will further aid the participation of stroke survivors in the community and lead to an improvement in their overall QOL.
