Abstract
Adherence has been considered a vital part of an athlete’s rehabilitation as it may help dictate the possible timeframe of their recovery from an injury before finally returning to their respective sports. However, there has been a growing interest in the effects of resilience in improving rehabilitation adherence. Several studies have mentioned that athletes must first develop a strong sense of psychological resilience before adhering to physical therapy treatments to aid them in developing positive responses to certain adversities (e.g., injury). Therefore, the general objective of this study was to determine whether there was a significant relationship between resilience and adherence to physical therapy among student-athletes after an orthopedic injury. The research design utilized in this study was the descriptive correlational research design. The recruited respondents were either senior high school or undergraduate student-athletes who attended schools, universities, or institutes within CALABARZON. The researchers administered survey tools via Google Forms, where 50 student-athletes responded to the survey. The results of this study revealed that the respondents were considered averagely resilient (M = 76.92) and averagely adherent (M = 52.96) even when grouped according to their sex (male: resilience = 77.06 and adherence = 53.33; female: resilience = 76.80 and adherence = 52.61). Moreover, it was found that there was a highly significant relationship (p < 0.01) with moderate correlation (Spearman’s rho = 0.560) between the two main variables mentioned in the study. Overall, this study may help emphasize the need for more patient-centered care wherein student-athletes were regarded as active participants in their care process to improve their resilience and rehabilitation adherence.
