Abstract
Weight management of children with Down Syndrome (CDS) is challenging due to physiological factors such as hypothyroidism, low metabolic rate, and chewing problems, as well as behavioral factors such as eating habits and reduced physical activity [Abo El-Fotoh et al., 2021]. In order to comprehend the phenomena that have an impact on the general well-being and physical health of overweight children with Down Syndrome (OCDS), the study seeks to bridge the gap between the healthcare professional (HCP) and parent/caregiver of the OCDS. The study is qualitative descriptive phenomenological in design and aims to explore the phenomena of the lived experiences of parents and caregivers in the weight management of CDS through the following themes: (1) attitudes, (2) challenges, and (3) other factors. Participants were gathered using purposive, convenient, and snowball sampling. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven (7) parents/caregivers to describe their experience in weight management. The data from the interview was analyzed using the Modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method and revealed seven (7) emergent themes. From the emergent themes, the researchers captured the essence of the lived experience of parents/caregivers to be 'Fulfilling the Parental Responsibility, and Persevering Through a Multifaceted Experience of Internal and External Complexities'. The study concludes that the relationship between the attitudes, challenges, and other factors in terms of weight management leads to an interpretation wherein parents/caregivers continue to create endeavors to promote and encourage healthy weight despite differing levels of challenges. With that, the study serves as a foundation for future studies consistent with the concept of weight management of CDS.
