Abstract

The COVID-19 virus has caused health consequences that affect one's quality of life (QOL). With the growing literature about Post-Acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) which last to four (4) or more weeks after recovering from COVID, the study aimed to determine the changes, challenges and effect of pain in patients with PACS and the impact of Physical Therapy (PT) to performance outcomes as to overall health and wellness, physical and social function of these patients. In this phenomenological study, 13 screened participants with PACS, aged 18 years old and above, both hospitalized and non-hospitalized who are residing in the Philippines were divided into three (3) focused group discussions and were interviewed with regards to their experiences with PACS and PT management which includes the outcomes of PT and its role in improving physical impairments, general health, and social outcomes. Results revealed that there were positive changes when it comes to the physical outcomes of the participants aided with physical rehabilitation, but several participants were still experiencing difficulty in returning to activities of daily living and livelihood due to symptoms experienced brought about by PACS especially fatigue. However, several participants also have other health management and coping strategies that contribute to the speed of their recovery. This study provided insights and deeper understanding of the lived experiences of patients with PACS and in the different areas of their health, wellness, physical and social function. This awareness is hoped to aid also the other healthcare professionals in addressing this syndrome.
