Abstract

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of elevated blood pressure (EBP) and its associated risk factors among undergraduate students of DLSMHSI Batch 2022 in 2019. The risk factors were divided into two: (1) the modifiable risk factors which include the Personal and Social History (Physical Activity and Vices) and Anthropometric Measurement (BMI), and (2) the non-modifiable risk factors which include the Sociodemographic Factors (Age and Sex) and Family History of Hypertension. The study used quantitative observational cross-sectional design and sampleswere gathered through convenience sampling. A signed consent form was gathered from the participants and a total of 87 students were included in the review of medical examination report wherein the following factors such as age, sex, family history of hypertension, physical activity, vices, history of medical/mental condition and drug intake, blood pressure measurement, and BMI were used as basis for the data analysis. The results of the study showed that twenty percent (20%) of the sample population has EBP, which is prevalent among male students, students who have a family history of hypertension, students with no history of smoking, those who do not engage in physical activities, and those who are overweight or obese. The study showed that there is no significant association between the identified risk factors and prevalence of EBP due to the limited sample population among DLSMHSI students Batch 2022 in 2019. Furthermore, studies regarding the prevalence of elevated BP and its possible associated risk factors among DLSMHSI students with a larger sample size were recommended.
