Abstract

This is aimed to identify the common disabilities/impairments that are present in barangay Parang Marikina. The researchers used the descriptive design using survey technique. Data were collected using the questionnaire/ interview method, from 98 households with a population of 564. The researchers, together with the community health workers of the barangay, went on a house-to-house survey with the questionnaire forms and interview guide. The head of the family was initially interviewed to find the number of the disabled/impaired family members. Queries were given and the researchers noted down on the guideline questionnaire items related to the individual's disabilities/impairment. Data collected were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage and mean. Data showed that 202 members of the barangay had either single or multiple disabilities/impairments. A total number of 25 disabilities/impairments were identified. Results showed that low back pain, arthritis, ling diseases, heart diseases, hypertension, and cerebral palsy were the six most common disabilities/impairments found in barangay Parang Marikina. Low back pain and arthritis are predominant among the middle adult age group and among the male members of the community. Most of these individuals have high school as their highest educational level and belongs to class C level of economic status. Recommendations: (1) The Garcia Hospital should develop a treatment protocol and acquire more modalities to facilitate the treatment of the stated disabilities. (2) Promotional advertisements and informational systems. (3) Educational pamphlets and hand outs should be given to the patients.
