Abstract

The main goal of rehabilitation is to restore patients to optimal functioning. The first aim of rehabilitation must be to achieve independence in activities of daily living. In order to achieve this goal, continuity of accessibility must exist among forms of transportation, building entrances and interiors. Part of comprehensive rehabilitation program involves the assessment of a newly injured persons home within that environment. Home visits are designed to check for accessibility problems, recommend modifications, assist patients and family in recognizing potential problems. Absence of information on even the application of architectural modifications at the patients home which may be of some positive utility to the rehabilitation effort. The researchers used the qualitative design. The data from the questionnaire was tallied, tabulated, and analyzed. Recommendations was then given after these aforementioned data was analyzed. The patients were given two (2) weeks, the subjects were again interviewed and were asked whether the recommendations were implemented, the patients were asked if they had access from one area to another and access to essential objects or had no access at all. If the recommendations were not followed, the caregivers and patients were asked the reasons for such, map of the houses of the patients, after recommendations were made and were also noted. The study showed that the most inaccessible areas for both patients were the shower and comfort rooms. Because of this, the researchers recommended that a chair should be placed with grab bars so that the patients can support upon transferring. Another is by adding rubber mats to prevent slippery floors. Other findings noted were poorhouse set up giving rise to difficulty and discomfort for the patients conditions. A great number of subject should be used to compare more results and ensure effectivity or in effectivity of the recommended home modifications given. Health professionals must be able to present simple low cost and low effort architectural recommendations to the patients family to ensure a greater chance of implementation and thereby enhance rehabilitation process as well.
