Abstract

The question frequently asked by a parent of a cerebral palsy (CP) patients to his/her Physical therapist would be:" Will he/she be able to walk? " The therapist is faced with a difficult question hoping that he would not give the parents a wishful answer. For the above reason, the authors conducted a research on the proportion of cerebral palsy patients prognosticated to be potential ambulators using Bleck's Index who eventually ambulate and those who did not. Data was obtained through a review of charts among CP patients in a chosen CP center, specifically Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc. Based on the results, only 22.09 of the total population in Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc. used Bleck's Index as a prognosticating tool for ambulation. Of the patients who utilized the said prognosticating index, a greater number of patients were predicted with poor prognosis followed by good, then guarded. Among the identified potential ambulators, 59.62% eventually ambulated. However, most of the patients identified as successful ambulators did not require the use of assistive device as compared to a small number of subjects who utilized gait aids. In addition, most of the ambulators are diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia with the presence of visual defects, specifically strabismus, as the most frequent associated problem which coexisted. Lastly, the researchers recommend that a future study regarding the validity of Bleck's Index a prognostication tool be done.
