Abstract
The study aimed to determine the knowledge , attitude and practices of DLSUMC housekeepers on proper body mechanics in the prevention of low pain. The researchers developed a training manual written in Filipino which was the source of the topics discussed during the lecture which was conducted last February 23, 2000 at DLSUMC at Pasong Lawin , Dasmariñas, Cavite. Research instrument in the form of pre-test and post -test were given. The result were then tallied m tabulated and analyzed. Results showed that DLSUMC Housekeeper had adequate knowledge in areas of proper body mechanics such as carrying objects in front (93%) got correct, lifting(80%) got correct, sleeping (86%), sitting (73%) and standing (46%) as seen in their scores in the pre-test. However, it was also showed that they had poor knowledge on the definition and genitourinary cause of Low Back Pain and in the post-test, it was shown the marked improvement in the knowledge on all areas of Low Back Pain and on proper body mechanics. It was also shown that all respondents (100%) have good attitude towards body mechanics i such a way that they believe it can help in the prevention of low back pain. As to practices , it was shown that only in areas of lifting (53%) and carrying of objects in front (93%) that these respondents demonstrated these correct practices and after the return demonstration, 100% of the study population showed correct practices of proper body mechanics. The researchers recommend to give more emphasis on the practical aspects of the training program to ensure that all topics that were discussed were acquired and will be applied in their daily life, similar training programs should be conducted on the detection, management and prevention of other common illnesses and lastly , a longer period of time should be allowed between the actual conduct of the training and the evaluation of its effects, which would then test the respondents abilities in what they have learned from the training manual.
