Abstract

In treating patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis of the hand, one of the most commonly used, is the use of the Therapeutic squeeze ball. This tool has been used for along period of time but no study has been conducted to prove its effectiveness. The researchers came up with the idea to introduce an alternative intervention, the Chinese Healing Ball (CHB), and compared its effect with the Conservative Rehabilitation Management (CRM) and Therapeutic Squeeze Ball (TSB). Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Range of Motion (ROM) and intensity of pain served as the criteria to determine which among the three interventions yielded better results. Fifteen (15) respondents who diagnosed to have Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) with same symptoms of Limitation of Motion (LOM), ADL difficulty and paint were gathered and divided into three groups. Five (5) respondents were randomly assigned for each of the interventions. Respondents using TSB and CHB are from remote areas of Dasmariñas, Cavite, and Nueva Ecija. Under CRMare from Rizal Medical Center, De LaSalle University Medical Center and Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital. An informed written consent was obtained from each of the respondents who participated inthe study. The respondents were also asked to fill out questionnaire and evaluation tools before the experiment, after two weeks and at the end of the experiment. The experiment lasted four (4) months. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and scheffe method were used to ascertain the most statistically significant intervention with the greatest amount of improvement on the three indicating variables namely: intensity of pain, Activity of Daily Living (ADL) and Range of Motion (ROM). To determine which among the three interventions was the most clinically significant, the researchers used the paired sample test. Critical value of 0.05 was used by the researchers for the study. The study suggests that in four months of experimentation, TSB and CRM resulted in significant improvement statistically in terms of relieving. pain. Clinically speaking, CHB exhibited marked improvement in all the indicated variables namely; ADL, ROM and intensity pain.
