Abstract

A survey on four selected communities in Dasmariñas, Cavite was conducted to determine the health promoting lifestyle of elderly individuals. In their study, health promoting lifestyles were determined by the background perceptions and ever to action to perform the behavior. Fifty (50) healthy elderly individuals from 65-90 years of age, a resident of either Salitran, Paliparan, Brgy. San Dionisio or Area C of Dasmariñas, Cavite were subjected to the research. a descriptive research design and haphazard non profitability sampling was utilized which focused on the most common health promoting lifestyle. Elderly individuals belonging from 65-70 years old were the most common complaint in promoting healthy lifestyles. Most of them had regular check-ups, had a balanced diet, had a regular walking exercise, had a normal 6-8 hours sleep, had regular vitamin intake, had enough rest, a non-smoker and a non alcoholic beverage drinker. Family was the most common source of information on how to stay healthy and to prevent generalized body weakness. The researchers recommended the future researchers make a further study regarding this topic. There should be a more extensive information campaign about proper diet, exercise, regular medical check-ups and the deleterious effects of excessive alcohol intake and smoking. Physical therapists and other health professionals should always advise their parents about promoting good healthy living to reach their active life expectancy by health promoting lifestyles. The data were gathered through questionnaire prepared by the researchers and distributed among the respondents. Descriptive statistical methods were used for analyzing the data collected by the percentage formula. Results: 1. Elderly individuals belonging to 65-70 years old had the highest frequency (42%) and there was an equal percentage between male and female respondents (50%). 2. Majority of the respondents had a regular check-up (56%) every twice a year (44%). 3. The most usual diet of the respondents was a combination of all food groups (70%). 4. Most of the respondents were non-smoker (78%) an non-alcoholic beverage drinker (68%). 5. Majority of the respondents had a regular exercise habit (78%) at 5-6 times per week (46%). 6. Walking was the most usual form of exercise (82%). 7. As a part of their recreation, watching television and listening over radio topped the list (72%). 8. There was also an equal percentage respondents who take and do not take vitamins (50%), half of them take vitamins once a day(44%). 9. Eighty-two percent (82%) had a normal slleeping pattern. 10. Sixty-two percent (62%) of the elderly sleeps for six to eight (6-8) hours. 11. Fifty-two percent (52%) take their naps. 12. To prevent generalized body weakness was their reason for staying healty (66%). The family was the most common of information on how to stay healthy (44%). The health promoting lifestyles of the elderly population in Dasmariñas, Cavite are a balanced diet, exercise, recreation, rest coupled with the exclusion of various excesses like smoking and alcoholic intake. Furthermore, having regular physical examinations and a positive mental attitude towards life may do keeping in good health. Recommendations: 1. A further study regarding this topic. 2. There should be a more extensive information campaign about proper diet, exercise, regular check-ups and the deleterious effects of excessive alcohol intake and smoking.
