Abstract

This study focuses on perception of the patient on how they acquire cervical arthritis so as to know the etiology of the disease based on the predisposing factors on the patients' point of view. The researchers also aim to know additional information on how to prevent cervical arthritis which will be enforced especially on potential patients based on the predisposing factors being listed by patients already having in order to lessen the population of cervical arthritis. The term arthritis implies the presence of synovial inflammation and includes swelling, loss of motion, pain, stiffness and heat of the involved joint. Degenerative changes in the spine are frequently in the cervical or lower lumbar areas. The Cervical spine is often involved. According to the review, sex preference is not distinguishable in cervical arthritis, and are commonly caused by several factors such as age, sex, microorganisms, genes, etc. Descriptive method was used in this study so that the factors were defined to make the idea of the patient clear regarding the etiology of cervical arthritis. Simple random sampling technique was used in this case study wherein the group from which the sample is drawn was based on patients' who were diagnosed to have Cervical arthritis whether out-patients or in-patients of all affiliated centers of DLSU-CPT, by using questionnaires for data gathering. Data gathered by the researchers were unlimited in number as long as it met the criteria of the study, and are then compiled and subjected to analysis and evaluation. Results showed that cervical arthritis has higher frequency in males than females. The age bracket who got the most frequency are those of greater than 50 years of age which agrees to the fact that arthritis occurs mostly in older persons. As to etiology, most of the patients claimed that it is work related which includes businessmen, farmers and teachers primarily possibly due to prolonged positioning of the neck in flexion. Other factors include fatigue, stress, and prolonged sitting which happens to be work related as well.
