Abstract
This study aimed to (1) determine the prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis among grade 5 and 6 elementary students in 2 public schools in Dasmariñas, Cavite for the study the school year 2004-2005; (2) to determine the sociodemographic and developmental profiles of the respondents; (3) to determine the postural deviation among the respondents; (4) to determine the flexibility and mobility of the spines of the respondents; and (5) to determine the result of the forward bending test as a special test for scoliosis. This is a survey to determine the prevalence of adoloscent idiopathic scoliosis among grade 5 and 6 elementary students in 2 public schools in Dasmariñas, Cavite. This study included 1,219 elementary students as sample size. A purposive sampling of 2 out of 25 schools in Dasmariñas, Cavite was done. For each of the 2 schools, 2 grade levels, Grade 5 and 6, were selected, each level with an estimated class size of 12 sections with 50-70 students per section for the SY 2004-2005. The researchers used Postural Analysis in anterior-posterior and lateral views, and the Forward bending test. Scoliosis and other posture-related problem was moderately prevalent among grade 5 and grade 6 elementary students having 45.6% and 3.7% prevalence rate respectively. Females (53.3%) counterparts. Scoliosis and other related postural problems are moderately prevalent among grade 5 and 6 elementary students in 2 public schools in Dasmariñas, Cavite for the school year 2004-2005. Females were greatly affected as compared to their male counterparts. Respondents who were suspected to have scoliosis were found that the scoliosis was of non-structural type. Furthermore, forward bending test is the best non-invasive evaluation procedure in screening for scoliosis. Researchers were convinced that scoliosis and other postura; anomalies come hand-in-hand and should be evaluated carefully and separately.
