Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the knowledge and experiences of parents with cerebral palsy children regarding cerebral palsy and child care. A total of 50 respondents from the rehabilitation centers of DLSUMC, JPRNMFI, General Emilio Aguinaldo Medical Hospital and Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc. were chosen and evaluated by the researchers based on the criteria set using purposive sampling and deemed to be appropriate for the study. Out of 50 respondents. 40% of them fall at the age of 31-40 years old, 76% were female, 82% were catholic, 65% were college graduate and 70% were not employed. Most of the respondents falls in the P5,000 and below group with regards to their family monthly income and the data also shows that majority of the respondents said that their spouses are the breadwinner in the family. These data was also helpful in choosing which respondents may be used. 84% of majority of the respondents who got >5 correct answers out of 10 questions are highly knowledgeable on the conditions of cerebral palsy: its etiology, clinical manifestations and treatment. The respondents agreed to the statements of emotional experience with a mean of 4.02, offer to the statements of physical experiences with a mean of 3.52, strongly agreed to the statements of social experiences with a mean of 4.29, strongly agreed to the statements of spiritual experiences with a mean of 4.88 and seldom to the statements of the financial experiences with a mean of 3.30.
