Abstract
Objective: The main objective of this study is to determine the most common functional problem experienced by patients with back pain seen at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the De La Salle Medical Center using the Generic Patient-Specific Scale. Research Design: Descriptive study. This review of records to determine the most common functional problem experienced by patients with back pain seen at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the De La Salle University Medical Center. Results: There were 53 patients, 17 males and 36 females. Majority of them were aged 35-44 years old, housewives and the main affected site is the low back pain with a majority diagnosis of lumbar muscle strain/LBP. Majority of the patients with upper back pain have difficulty in doing laundry, lifting activities, UE/LE garment dressing difficulty turning head, prolonged sitting, ironing and typing. For lowerr back pain, majority of patients have difficulty in lifting activities, bending, prolonged sitting, prolonged standing, laundry and prolonged walking. Among the common functional proablems of the patients with upper back pain, neck movements were some of the activities they have maximal difficulty performing. doing laundry, ironing, UE/LE garment dressing, lifting and prolonged walking were the activities they have moderated dificulty performing. For lower back pain, they have maximal difficulty in prolonged sitting to standing, using the computer, studying, lifting activities and bed turning. Prolonged walking, prolonged sitting and bending activities fell under moderate difficulty. Conclusions: After a careful review of the records of the patients with back pain, the researchers found out that the most common functional problem of patient with upper and low back pain is lifting activity based on generic patient-specific scale. Aside from lifting activity, the patients with upper back pain also have difficulty doing the laundry, UE/LE garment dressing difficulty in turning head, prolonged sitting, ironing, typing and sleeping. Likewise patients with low back pain also have difficulty doing the laundry, prolonged standing, bending activity and prolonged sitting.
