Abstract
A study on the level of mobility was conducted to children with cerebral palsy at Philippine Cerebral Palsy Incorporated. Mobility is the ability to move freely and efficiently through any environment. Some children, who, through disease such as cerebral palsy, lose their ability to move freely becoming to some degree dependent upon others. Objectives: The main objective of this study is to determine the level of mobility of children with cerebral palsy at Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc. The researchers specific obejctive are: 1) determine the profile of children with cerebral palsy as to age and type of cerebral palsy; 2) general classification according to symptom and topographical classification; and 3) determine the level of mobility of children with cerebral palsy as to bed mobility, sitting, standing and walking. Research Design: Descriptive study. Setting: Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc. Sacred Street, San Antonio Village, Makati City, Philippines 1203. Participants: 40 children with cerebral palsy with age ranging from 3 years old and above. Procedures/interventions: A letter of permission was given to Dr. Francis Xavier Dimalanta, Director of Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc., asking for permission for the researchers to conduct a study on children with cerebral palsy. The assessment tool was validated during their PT sessions and assess them based on the scale that was set by the researchers. Main Outcome Measures: The assessment tool has three parts: 1) general information. 2) profile of children with cerebral palsy and 3) level of mobility of children with cerebral palsy as to bed mobility, sitting, standing and walking. The researchers used a scale adopted and modified from the Move Assessment Tool with a scale of highly achieved to not achieved. Results and Discussions: Majority of the 40 children with cerebral palsy at Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc. were at 7 to 8 years old and are spastic quadriplegic type. The results of the study showed the following. A weighted mean of 3.1 as to bed mobility which corresponds to low level of mobility and very low level of mobility as to standing and walking with weighted mean of 1.6 and 1.4 respectively. Conclusion: Based on the data and results gathered, the researchers conclude that children with cerebral palsy at Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc. has a low level of mobility with an overall of 2.1 as to bed mobility, sitting, standing and walking.
