Abstract
This is a descriptive study that determine the factors influencing the Cardiovascular Endurance of Basketball Varsity Players of De La Salle University - Dasmarinas specifically their demographic factors (age and gender), physical factors (body mass index, pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate), lifestyle factors (smoking status and alcohol drinking status), and training and exercise factors (intensity, duration, frequency and years of training). The study used the Bruce Treadmill Protocol Test as the primary research instrument in determining the cardiovascular endurance of the 24 Basketball Varsity Players. Results of the study showed that regardless of the gender, most of them (20 varsity players) had a superior Vo2 max. As to demographic factors, male varsity players who had an age of 20-29 had a higher Vo2 max than females and those aged 13-19 years old. As to physical factors, varsity players who had an ideal body weight, blood pressure of greater than 120/80 mmHg, normal respiratory rate of 16-20 cpm and pulse rate of greater than 100 bpm had a higher Vo2 max as compared to the varsity players who were underweight, with blood pressure of less than 120/80 mmHg, respiratory rate of less than 16 cpm and those with normal pulse rate. As to lifestyle factors, non-smokers who are alcoholic drinkers have a higher VO2 max than those players who are smoking and non-alcoholic drinkers. As to training and exercise factors, varsity players who trained with lower intensity, longer duration for 4-6 times a week for 3 to four years had a higher measure of cardiovascular endurance. The study also revealed that there is a significant difference in the cardiovascular endurance between male and female varsity player. In conclusion, the Cardiovascular Endurance of Basketball Varsity Players at De La Salle University Dasmarinas can be influenced by some factors namely: Demographic, Physical, Lifestyle, and Training and Exercise. The researchers then recommend that initial determination and monitoring of cardiovascular endurance of basketball varsity players must be done. Likewise, a correlational study on the different factors influencing cardiovascular endurance must be conducted.
