Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to determinde the common conventional methods used in the motor control training of stroke patients by De La Salle Health Science Institute PT Clinicians for Gait Rehabilitation. This study utilized a researcher made questionnair that was written in english. The tool was divided in two parts. The fist part consist of items regarding socio-demographic and professional rofile of the respondents and the second item contains the conventional methods used in training stroke patients for gait. The researcher made questionnaire that was written in english. The tool was divided in two parts. The first part consists of items regarding socio-demographic and professional profile of the respondents and the second itme contains the conventional methods used in training stroke patients for gait. The researchers used a purposive sampling method in selecting PT clinicians from various DLSHSI affiliated rehabilitation centers offering stroke rehabilitation. Seventy (70) respondents met the inclusion criteria which were: should be a Licensed PT, PT clinician with at least 5 stroke patients handled for gait training. The result of the study shows that the common conventional method used for gait training and specific used by Physical Therapy clinicians are: Balance Training specifically lateral weight-shift on the affected side, Weight-Bearing Exercises specifically sit-to-stand, Strengthening Exercise for the Hip flexors, NDT combinations specifically standing knee bend activity from Brunnstrom, stepping activity with unaffected Lower Extremity forward by Bobath, Flexibility Exercise for the calf muscles and use of canes for technical aids for improving mobility under modality intervention. The result of the study will help physical therapist in creating a management for stroke patients to achieve the goal of the rehabilitation program in concerning gait training. The researchers recommend to conduct a follow-up study on the effectiveness of each method for motor control training of stroke patients for gait. In addition, an intensive research study that includes other rehabilitation centers that cater stroke patients for gait training must be done.
