Abstract

This descriptive study entitled "risk of complicating the illness using the recent life changes questionnaire among adult patients with stroke undergoing rehabilitation" aimed to identify the risk of complicating the illness among adult stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation in selected facilities as to health, work, home and family, personal and social and financial. this can be considered a pioner study in the Philippine setting using the RLCQ and will provide additional information to the limited studies about stress level of the patients with stroke. The study conducted among the 50 adult patients with stroke who qualified for the study. The respondents were undergoing rehabilitation at St. Paul Hospital Dasmariñas, Cavite; GEAMH in Trece Martirez, Cavite; St. Dominic Hospital in Bacoor, Cavite; Our Lady of Pillar Hospital in Bacoor, Cavite; and in De La Salle University-Medical Center in Dasmariñas, Cavite. They were seelcted based from the following inclusion cirteria: adult patients with stroke undergoing rehabilitation as out-patients in selcted rehabilitation centers in Cavite; willing to participate in the study; can read and write - at least finished primary education; and has no impaired judgement. The RLCQ was translated in Filipino which contains 74 itmes of life events. The checklist questionnaires consist only of the life event and a box adjacent to it which will be checked if the corresponding life event happened to them in the past one year. Results showed that health is the life category that has the highest percentage (38.30%) and this is interpreted as having moderate risk for complicating the illness. Following health is financial category (9.60%), personal and social category (7.85%), work category (6.60%) and lastly, home and family (5.14%). All these 3 categories give of very low risk for the respondent to complicate their illness. Results also showed that in terms of gender, males experience greater stress than females.
