Abstract
This is a descriptive study that determines the level of knowledge and practices of the bus conductors of Erjohn & Almark Bus Company on assisting elderly passengers and passengers with disability. Specifically, level of knowledge as to determining passengers who needs assistance, precautions in assisting passengers with disability, rights of passengers with disability and use of assistive device and practices as to boarding, stand-to-sit and sit-to-stand using assistive devices, alighting and precautionary measures were determined. A total of forty (40) bus conductors participated in the study and the study was conducted at the terminal of Erjohn and Almark who observes policies and follow guidelines in assisting passengers with disability. they were given a researchers-made questionnaire to anser the objectives of the study. Results of the study showed that moajority of the respondents are 28-32 years old finished high schoo, withi 1-3 years of service who encounter elderly passengers and passengers with disability for more than 10 times per week and all of them are able to identify passengers with disability especially elderly passengers. The bus conductors of Erjohn and Almark Bus Company have a very high level of knowledge in assisting elderly passengers and passengers with disability based on the computed over-all mean score of 91.51. Specifically, the level of knowledge of bus conductors in identifying passengers who need assistance in very high (95), followed by the level of knowledge of bus conductors in using assistive devices (92.52) and the level of knowledge of bus conductors in precautions in assisting elderly and passengers with disability. Most of the respondents got their knowledge from reading materials like books, magazines, and newspapers. The researchers then recommend that bus companies must provide workshops, seminars, or training in assisting passengers with disability to their bus conductors.
