Abstract

Athletes who use their bodies to their full capacity are more prone to soft tissue injuries which may come in the form of sprains, strains, muscle stiffness, muscle pain, limitation of motion, and recurrent injury. Obstacles course racing (OCR) athletes are required to overcome physical obstacles and challenges not limited to climbing overhead walls, crawling under barbed wire, surpassing monkey bars, rope climbing, and running on muddy and uneven surfaces. It also includes multiple kilometers of running with different obstacles. With that in mind, ankle injuries are a common presentation among OCR athletes because of the grueling demand the muscles undergo to produce the movement needed for the sport. Certain characteristics such as age, sex, and BMI can contribute to the prevalence of ankle sprain injuries. Therefore, the researchers determined the prevalence of ankle injury among OCR Filipino Athletes and the risk factors that contributed to the injury. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of ankle injuries among OCR athletes and the predisposing risk factors they coincide with. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted. Using non-probability convenience sampling, the OCR athletes answered a self-made survey questionnaire. The prevalence of ankle injury among OCR athletes was 52.46%. The odds of having ankle injury among males is (1/.3308) 3 times higher than those of females (p-value=.037) and among those who had a specific obstacle course is 5 times higher than those without a specific obstacle course (p-value = 031). However, these risk factors yielded a wide confidence interval due to a small sample size and therefore, may indicate low precision. The prevalence of ankle injury among Filipino OCR athletes was 52.46% and the risk factors of ankle injury were obstacle course and sex.
