Abstract
Background: The available evidence on the factors influencing the outcomes of Interprofessional Education (IPE) in the Philippines is currently limited. To address this gap, this study aimed to determine the factors affecting the attitudes and competencies of undergraduate students who already took the IPE course at a higher education institution in the Philippines.
Methods: This descriptive, quantitative research implemented a cross-sectional survey using the Interprofessional Attitudes Scale (IPAS) and Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Competency Self-Assessment Tool, to measure the level of attitudes and competencies, respectively. It also utilized content analysis of data obtained from the open-ended questionnaire derived from the WHO (2010) IPE curricular mechanisms that shape the attitudes and competencies towards IPE.
Results: The 164 survey participants comprised of students from the following programs: BS Physical Therapy (BSPT) (n=64, 39.0%), BS Medical Laboratory Science (BSMLS) (n=48, 29.3%), BS Pharmacy (BSP) (n=38, 23.2%), BS Nuclear Medicine Technology (BSNMT) (n=9, 5.5%), and BS Nursing (BS) (n=5, 3.0%). Majority took the IPE in their 3rd year (n=96, 58.5%), while others in their 2nd year (n=63, 38.4%), and 4th year (n=5, 3.0%). Based on IPAS and IPEC mean scores (x̄), students were found to have positive levels of attitudes and competencies towards IPE, with BSP having the highest level of attitudes (x̄=4.49) and competencies (x̄=4.58). The levels of attitudes and competencies were found to have a significantly positive direct correlation with each other (p<0.01). The identified mechanisms that influenced their behavior were the collaborative activities, effective assessments, mandatory attendance outcomes-based learning, satisfactory learning outcomes, schedule preference, and topic coverage.
Conclusion: The factors affecting the level of attitudes and competencies of the participants included their program, year level, and the curricular mechanisms described by the WHO (2010).
