Abstract
Grit, defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, has emerged as a non-cognitive trait influencing academic success. In pharmacy education, where resilience, consistency, and effort are essential, grit helps students overcome academic challenges. Previous research explored grit in limited student cohorts but yielded mostly nonsignificant results highlighting the need for a broader investigation. This study aimed to determine the grit levels of B.S. Pharmacy students across year levels in a higher education institution in the Philippines and investigate how demographic factors, course standing, and involvement in student organizations relate to grit. A descriptive, quantitative, and non-experimental research design was employed. A total of 232 participants from first to fourth year B.S. Pharmacy students completed an online survey questionnaire comprising demographic data, college experience, and the 12-item Grit Scale (Duckworth, 2007). Data analysis involved T-test, Multiple Linear Regression, and Two-Way ANOVA. Findings revealed no statistically significant differences in grit across year levels. While most demographic variables showed no significant association with grit, two stood out as statistically significant: sex at birth where female students demonstrated slightly higher grit levels (M = 3.18) than males (M = 3.04), and students from non-sectarian schools reported higher grit scores (M = 3.19) compared to those from non-La Salle sectarian schools (M = 2.98). Although other factors showed no significant association, the study offers valuable insights into grit’s complex development and highlights the importance of supportive academic environments.
