Abstract
As technological advancement over the years has been continuously improving, the healthcare system integrates digital technologies to improve quality patient-centered care and patient outcomes. This could be prominently exemplified by the widespread use of Electronic Prescription or e-prescription that streamlines convenience, efficacy and alternative communication between healthcare professionals. However, challenges could arise with such technological shifts – from the use of traditional paper-based prescription into electronic prescription. In light of the present situation, this study aims to determine the extent of e-prescription utilization, perceived barriers and enabling factors in the utilization of e-prescription and whether there is significant correlation between the demographic profile of hospital pharmacists (age, educational attainment, years of practice and type of hospital) to the perceived barriers and enabling factors. In pursuing the study, a self made survey questionnaire was utilized which were given to 72 hospital pharmacists respondents in a paper-based form or Google forms. The overall findings showed that hospital pharmacists mostly agreed on the patient-related barrier to the utilization of e-prescription, with an average rating of 2.32. Correlating the relationship between these barriers and demographic factors, no significant correlations were found. This suggests that age, educational background, years of experience, and type of hospital did not influence the pharmacists' perceptions of these barriers. In contrast, the perceived enabling factors that respondents believe would be helpful in addressing this barrier were regulatory, interpersonal and professional relationships, patient-related, personnel-related, and organizational enabling factors with regulatory enablers as the mostly agreed enabler, with a total mean of 2.29. Compared to the perceived barrier, there was a significant correlation between age and all the enabling factors except for personnel-related enablers. The findings indicate that the age of hospital pharmacists affects how they perceive the modifiers as possible enablers in the use of e-prescription.
