Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has made adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder susceptible to changes in social participation due to associated lockdowns and restrictions to be strictly followed. This study aimed to determine the impact of COVID-19 on the social participation of adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in selected provinces in CALABARZON, specifically in Cavite, Batangas, and Laguna and determine the experiences of the primary caregiver's perspective as to how the COVID-19 pandemic affects the social participation of adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in terms of family participation, friendships, peer group participation and community participation. A phenomenological design was used to investigate and hear the participant's experiences to understand the impact of COVID-19 to adolescents with ASD in terms of social participation. Purposive and convenience sampling was used wherein 6 primary caregivers for pilot testing and 7 primary caregivers are selected as respondents that agreed to accomplish a one-on-one interview. A validated self-made questionnaire was used to acquire their reported experiences in different occupations in social participation. The overall results for the impact of COVID-19 and their deemed experiences in social participation were expressed as part of the Colaizzi's Method. Results revealed that there are changes in social participation of adolescents with their social context during the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar findings were established for impact of COVID-19, family participation, friendships, peer group participation and community participation. Regardless, adolescents with autism spectrum disorder should be able to catch up and devote time to improve social participation brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
