Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of social support and coping of parents with children with terminal illness. To achieve the purpose of this study a descriptive correlational design was utilized. The primary purpose for applying this method was to look for patterns of variation between two or more phenomenon. From the presented data, the following findings were deduced and depicted in the order of the questions asked at the beginning of the study: 1. The respondents' profile showed that of the 50 respondents, 38% belong to the 26 to 36 years old group or the adult, 56% were females, 72% were married, 54% were high school graduates, 78% had a monthly income of 10,000 and below, 74% belong to a nuclear family and 68% were Catholics. 2. The ;evel of social support of parents with tertminally-ill children was satisfactoty and has an over-all mean of 3.05. 3. The level of coping of parents with children with terminal illness was good. The overall mean was 2.97. 4. The level of social support of parents with children with terminal illness when grouped according to age, gender, civil status, socio-economic status, religious affiliation and family structure attainment. With the p[resented data, it was discovered that high school graduates had the highest level of social support, 3.14 followed by those who are college graduates, 3.13 and elementary graduates, 2.54. 5. The level of coping of parents with terminally ill children when grouped accoridng to age, gender, civil status, socio-economic status, family structure, educational attainment and religious affiliation did not vary. 6. There is a significant relationship between social support and coping of parents with children with terminal illness since the R-value was 1.00, which was highly correlated at 0.01 level. On the basis of the summary of findings, the researchers drew up these conclusions: 1. Most respondents of the study were adults, females, married, high school graduates, earn 10,000 and below, belong to a nuclear family and are Catholic. The mothers were mostly the one at the children's bedside since their husbands were working. Philippine Children's Medical Center and National Children's Hospital are government hospitals, so. most of the respondents earned minimum wages. With regards to the religious affiliation, majority of the Filipinos are Catholics, so, it was also expected that most of the respondnets belonged in this religious sect. 2. The respondents are satisfied with their level of social support and have good level of coping. It is concluded that the respondents recieved enough social support and were able to adjust to the situation they were in. 3. The level of social support of parents with children with terminal illness did not vary when grouped according to age, gender, civil status, socio-economic status, religious affiliation and family structure. Thus, it is concluded that these does not affect the level of social support. 4. Respondnets grouped according to educational attainment varied in the level of social support. Thus, it is concluded that the educational attainment affects the level of social support. 5. The level of coping f parents with children with terminal illness did not vary grouped according to age, gender, civil status, educational attainment, socio-economic status, family structure and religious affiliation, This implies that anyone could to such situation. 6. There was linear relationship, and therefore, there is correlation between the level of social support and level of coping of parents with children with terminal illness.
