Abstract

The purpose of the study is to describe the experiences of adolescents and adults belonging to a broken family. To bring into focus the lived experiences, the study aimed to answer the question, "what are your experiences as a person belonging to a broken family?" (Ano ang iyong mga karanasan bilang bahagi ng isang "broken family"?). The study is limited to participants who come from a broken family, with ages that range from 12 to 34 years old (potter-perry 2005). They were selected regardless of gender, status, cause of separation of their parents, and number of years since their parents separated. Whether the participants live independently or live with one of the parents or with a significant other. We, the researchers, do not intend to generalize the experiences of people who come from a broken family because these experiences vary from one person to another. Rather it aims to present multiple realities behind the experiences of adolescents and adults belonging to a broken family. n the absence of their parents, significant others were there to stand by the participants and took the parental responsibility of providing their needs, with this, the participants no longer seek for their absent parents. Their friends also played a vital role by giving them support and by being there if they need someone to talk with. It is with their friends that they can share easily their feelings and endeavors. The participants also derived their strengths from their good relationship with God and their significant others Although, there was one participant who simply ignores his family situation to cover the feeling pain.Absence of one of the parents due to separation was difficult and painful. Living alone or doing things on their own at a very young age were some of their experiences after one of their parents was gone. These made them realize how difficult life is when one Is alone. The feeling of emptiness was obviously felt by the participants. They miss the things that they usually do when their families were still intact and this led to longing ness and desire for love of family. Being part of a broken family has negative and positive effect to a child's life. The participant's lifestyle, emotion and studies were negatively affected. However, the experience also brought them inspiration. While in the process of accepting the situation, the participants have been holding on their faith in God. One of them had difficulty accepting changes in family relationships but eventually realized God's purpose for giving the situation. Their experiences brought greater faith in God. Being part of a broken family drove the participants to attain a better future. Their experience made them stronger to face the battle of having their own family by making sure they make the right decision.
