Abstract
The study was primarily undertaken to determine the emotional responses of chronically ill patients in selected hospitals in Cavite. B. SPECIFIC 1. To know the profile of chronically ill patients according to age, duration of illness, educational attainment, gender, support system, and type of chronic illness. 2. To know the emotional responses of chronically ill patients in selected hospitals in Cavite. 3. To determine if there is a significant difference on the emotional responses of chronically ill patients when grouped according to age, duration of illness, educational attainment, gender, support system, and type of chronic illness. The study focused on the emotional responses of chronically ill patients. The total population of the respondents was seventy five (75) chronically ill patients in selected hospitals in Cavite. The respondents were selected base on the following inclusion criteria a) ages 16 and above b) either male or female c) with educational background of at least elementary graduate d) willing to participate in the study and e) in a state of chronic condition of at least 5 to 10 years and above. The setting took place in selected hospitals in Cavite. Specifically: Bautista Hospital, Contreras Medical Hospital, De La Salle University Medical Center, Dr. Jose P. Rizal Memorial Hospital, Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital and Jose Sotto Tantiansu Cancer Institute. The researchers interviewed the respondents using a self-made tool that consisted of possible emotional responses which may be experienced by chronically ill patients. The self made tool included the different emotional responses that were based from the review of related literature and some questions were drawn from the tool on the emotional responses of nurses regarding their ICU patients in a study conducted by Arcega and Reyes. It contained thirty (30) statement-questionnaire which was critiqued. Validated and approved support system and type of chronic illness he following findings were drawn from this study: 1. Among the seventy five (75) chronically ill patients, 55% were female, 47% belonged to 51-70 years old age group and 48% had reached high school level, with the support of their immediate family. Likewise, 32% of the respondents have metabolic disorders and 39% of them were diagnosed to have chronic illness for 6-10 years. 2. Among the emotional responses, 89%-100% of the respondents were hopeful that after their recovery, everything will return to normal. Least among the statements of emotional responses, 11%-40% of the total respondents were afraid that their doctors might give bad prognosis with regards to their illness. 3. There was no significant difference on the emotional responses of chronically ill patients in selected hospital in Cavite when they were grouped according to age, duration of illness, gender, support system and type of chronic illness. Since the computed chi square value of 6.13, 0.82, 0.19, 0.16 and 3.75 for age, duration of illness, gender, support system and type of chronic illness were lower than the tabular value of 7.82 using 3 as degree of freedom at 0.05 level of significance. However, there was a significant difference on the emotional responses of chronically ill patients in selected hospitals in Cavite when they were grouped according to educational attainment. Since the computed chi-square value of 9.54 using 3 as degree of freedom at 0.05 level of significance is higher than the tabulated chi-square value of 7.82.
