Abstract

The researchers used the descriptive type of research design. The study utilized purposive sampling in obtaining respondents composed of 200 nursing students from the first year, second year, third year and fourth year students of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute, Academic Year 2008-2009. The researchers obtained 50 respondents from each year level who must have a parent working abroad, either a mother, a father or both. A self-made questionnaire was pre-tested to 30 nursing students of Emilio Aguinaldo College, Dasmarinas, Cavite to test its validity and reliability. The following statistical treatment techniques were utilized by the researchers to obtain valid results: frequency, percentage, mean, t-test, f-test and Cronbach alpha. The following conclusions were obtained in this study: 1) Majority of the selected nursing students of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute were female, Catholic, included in the socio-economic class A, eldest children in the family, have fathers migrated abroad and were less than one yer old when parent first migrated abroad; 2) Parental migration had a very good level of psychological effect and a very good social effect to the selected nursing students of DLSHSI; 3) There was no significant difference in the psychosocial effects of parental migration when the respondents were grouped according to gender, religious affiliation, socio economic status, ordinal position, age of the respondent when parent first migrated and migrating parent
