Abstract
The researchers utilized the descriptive correlational method and under the non-probability sampling, convenience method is used in choosing their respondents. This study was conducted to persons age sixty years old and above residing at selected institutions in Cavite such as: San Jose Bahay Kalinga in Indang, Cavite, Mama’s Hope Haven in General Trias, Cavite, Tahanan ni Maria in Carmona, Cavite and St. Joseph Bahay Pag-ibig at Pag-asa in Imus, Cavite. Two sets of instruments were utilized in this study. The first set of questionnaire, the ADL Multidimensional Evaluation Checklist was adapted by the researchers and was used to determine the level of performance of activities of daily living of the respondents. The second set is the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) by Yesavage et al. (1982) that used to measure the presence of depression specifically among older persons. Both sets of questionnaires were translated into Filipino for the respondents’ better understanding and comprehension. Percentage distribution, weighted mean, standard deviation, Z-score, t-test, f-test or One Way ANOVA test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient were the statistical tools utilized in the study. Based on the findings, the following conclusions have been drawn: 1) Most of the Filipino older persons in selected institutions in Cavite are female, high school graduate, widowed, have stayed in the institution for one to three years and are previously employed; 2) Filipino older persons in selected elderly institutions in Cavite can perform their activities of daily living independently; 3) Most of the Filipino older persons in selected elderly institutions in Cavite are depressed; 4) The performance of activities of daily living of the Filipino older persons in selected elderly institutions in Cavite do not vary as to gender, educational attainment, civil status, length of stay in the institution and previous employment status; 5) Depression state of Filipino older persons in selected elderly institutions in Cavite varies in gender, educational attainment, civil status, length of stay in the institution and previous employment status; 6) The performance of activities of daily living is not related to depression state among the Filipino older persons in selected elderly institutions in Cavite.
