Abstract

This study utilized non-experimental descriptive type of research design. There were 150 freshman students who are taking up Bachelor of Science in Nursing for the school year 2010-2011. They were chosen using convenience sampling. Self-made instrument was used for data gathering. Data was analyzed through frequency distribution, percentage, mean, ANOVA and t-test. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of the selected De La Salle Health Sciences Institute freshman students taking up Bachelor of Science in Nursing were female and have a monthly family income of Php30,001 and above. Science is their favorite subject in high school and have a relative who works in the medical field; 2) Socioeconomic factor greatly affects the career choice of the respondents. It is considered to be the most influential factor affecting the career choice of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute freshman nursing students SY 2010-2011 in taking up Bachelor of Science in Nursing; 3) There is no significant difference in the factors affecting the career choice of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute freshmen nursing students SY 2010-2011 in taking up Bachelor of Science in Nursing when grouped according to gender, monthly family income and favorite subject. On the other hand, there is a significant difference when the respondents were grouped according to any relative who works in the medical field.
