Abstract

Descriptive type of research was used in this study. Stratified random sampling was utilized by the researchers in selecting the respondents of this study. The research instrument was a self-made questionnaire and was validated by four (4) faculty members. Percentage, frequency distribution, mean, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) or f-test were the main statistical treatments used in the analysis of the data. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of the respondents of this study consisted of students whose age group is 17-18 years old, with monthly family income of P50,001 and above, could speak both English and Filipino at home, and have mother and father who are both college graduates. There is equal number of respondents in terms of year level; 2) The respondents strongly agreed that their desire to improve English proficiency, self-confidence, the use of English as a medium of instruction in teaching in elementary, high school and college years, the way their instructors teach English, the alternate use of English and Filipino language, mass media, and game affected their English proficiency. They also agreed that the way their parents or guardians use English, the motivation from one or both of their parents/guardians, the financial status of their parents, the encouragement from people other than their parents, the way the respondents converse with their friends, and the implementation of English speaking policy in school affected their English proficiency; 3) There are no significant differences in the factors affecting the English proficiency of the respondents when they are grouped according to age, year level, monthly income, and educational attainment of parents, however, there is a significant difference in the factors affecting the English proficiency of the respondents when they are grouped according to language spoken at home.
