Abstract
The study utilized a non-experimental descriptive type of research design. The study involved staff nurses, male or female, aged 21 and above, regardless of duration of years of service, competent in using the English language, and have experienced care for cancer patients. The study was conducted in selected hospitals in Cavite, namely De La Salle University Medical Center (DLSUMC), Our Lady of the Pillar Medical Center (OLPMC), and St. Dominic Medical Center (SDMC). The respondents were selected using purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used was a 40-item self-made questionnaire, which underwent the process of validation and pre-testing. The statistical treatments utilized were frequency, percentage, mean, t-test and F-test or Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The study concluded that, from the 60 staff nurses who have handled cancer patients, most of them belonged to early adulthood with ages ranging from 21-26 years old. There were more female staff nurses than male. Most of the respondents have been in the service for more than a year. The staff nurses who handled cancer patients were knowledgeable to a great extent. The staff nurses who handled cancer patients were moderately skilled in terms of physiological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual aspects. Age was a specific predictor of the level of knowledge of staff nurses in handling cancer patients. The level of knowledge of staff nurses in handling cancer patients was not affected by gender and years of service. The level of skills of staff nurses in handling cancer patients in terms of physiological aspects was not affected by age, gender, and years of service. The level of skills of staff nurses in handling cancer patients in terms of sociological aspects was not affected by age, gender, and years of service. The level of skills of staff nurses in handling cancer patients in terms of spiritual aspects was not affected by age, gender, and years of service.
