Abstract
This study aims to understand the meaning of longevity through the lived experiences of older adults, specifically asking the grand tour question: “What are your experiences that lead to longevity of life?” (“Anu-ano ang iyong karanasan na nagdulot ng mahabang buhay?”). The study focuses on Filipino older adults aged 71 and above—an age group that holds particular importance in the Philippine context, where the average life expectancy is approximately 71 years. By examining individuals who have lived beyond this national benchmark, the research sheds light on the unique factors, lifestyle choices, and social influences that may contribute to their longevity. Understanding their perspectives is crucial for developing culturally grounded strategies to promote healthy aging and improve the quality of life for the growing elderly population in the country. Using a qualitative approach, the study involved semi-structured, in-person interviews with participants who had manageable illnesses, no severe cognitive impairments, and could perform daily tasks with little to no assistance. Those with high dependency or critical conditions were excluded. The researchers applied purposive sampling and used bracketing to reduce bias. Data were manually transcribed and analyzed through a five-step process involving coding and thematic analysis. From 11 participants, four key themes emerged: Thriving through Healthy Living, Navigating Life’s Challenges with Positivity, Fostering Strength from Familiar Faces, Redirected to a Better Self. These reflect habits such as eating nutritious food, engaging in regular activity, avoiding harmful vices, managing stress, embracing positivity, fostering spiritual devotion, and maintaining social bonds. These findings highlight that longevity is influenced by a balance of healthy routines, emotional strength, meaningful relationships, and spirituality. The study recommends a holistic approach to healthy aging—one that integrates physical care, emotional support, and strong social and spiritual connections. It also encourages nursing education to emphasize geriatric care, communication, and preventive strategies to support aging populations effectively.
