Abstract
Patient loss is an inevitable and emotionally challenging aspect of nursing, particularly in high-risk units such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This qualitative study examines the experiences of NICU nurses in the context of patient loss, focusing on their emotional responses, resilience, and coping mechanisms. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative research design, data were gathered through in-depth interviews to capture the complex and subjective experiences of NICU nurses. The findings revealed three major themes: (1) Carrying the torch beyond the final breath, which describes how nurses uphold professional practices through dignified postmortem care and emotional support to families; (2) The tides of grief, which highlights the emotional toll of loss and the resilience nurses build to maintain quality care despite grief; and (3) Finding light in the darkness, which reflects their use of coping mechanisms such as peer support, faith, and acceptance. Based on these findings, the study recommends the establishment of structured debriefing programs, the promotion of open communication within healthcare institutions, and the integration of grief management training into nursing education. Furthermore, future research or researchers should investigate the long-term impact of repeated patient loss on NICU nurses and the effectiveness of various coping interventions. By understanding and addressing the emotional challenges faced by NICU nurses, this study aims to contribute to the development of more supportive work environments that enhance nurse well-being and patient care.
