Abstract
The study used a quantitative design to evaluate the level of competency and training needs of Adult ICU Nurses from selected hospitals in Cavite using the 11 Core Competencies of Nursing from the CCNAPI Standards of Practice and Training Needs Assessment Theory. The data were collected via survey forms utilizing pen while minding ethical principles. The majority of the respondents were 23 to 39 years old (82.4%), female (80.4%), single (54.9%), and underwent in-service training (100%). The ICU nurses consider themselves as proficient (M=4.17) in critical care nursing practice, but least proficient in practicing research (M=3.82). Most of the respondents still consider the high need for training, especially in applying electroshock, with a “very high training need.” Findings suggest that the demographics do not influence the self-assessed competency of ICU nurses, as well as training needs when grouped according to age, sex, and marital status. However, the years of experience show significance, suggesting an influence on their training needs. The findings of this study suggest that the majority of ICU nurses assessed themselves as proficient in critical care nursing practice; however, they still indicated a high need for training. Age, sex, marital status, and years of experience did not influence the nurses’ self-assessed level of competency. Only years of experience affected training needs, while other demographic variables showed no impact.
