Abstract
This study assessed the preparedness of third-year nursing students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute in providing gero palliative care, focusing on their knowledge, skills, and attitudes. It emphasized the importance of health education in improving the care of elderly patients. A convergent parallel mixed methods design was employed, combining quantitative data from questionnaires and qualitative insights from focus group discussions. Confidentiality and data integrity were upheld throughout the study. Out of 167 respondents, 82% were female and 18% male. Students reported a high level of preparedness in delivering gero-palliative care (M = 3.31). A t-test revealed no significant difference between genders (p = 0.845), supporting the null hypothesis. The findings aligned with Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, encompassing Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation. This theoretical framework underscored how students integrated academic learning with clinical practice. Key themes identified included Gender Dynamics in Patient Care, Bridging Care and Communication, Caring Through Challenges, Preparedness in Gero Palliative Care, and Positive Outcomes from Duty. These themes reflected students’ clinical experiences and their capacity to meet the complex needs of geriatric patients requiring palliative care. The study showed that nursing students are well-prepared to provide gero palliative care, regardless of gender. Their training equips them with the necessary skills and empathy to deliver high-quality care, contributing to better patient outcomes in clinical settings. The study underscored the vital role of experiential learning and health education in shaping competent future healthcare providers.
