Abstract
This study explored the preparedness of Emergency Room (ER) nurses in caring for clients with Monkeypox (Mpox), addressing the limited research on nurse readiness, particularly in outbreak situations. ER nurses are the first line of defense in assessing, containing, and caring for patients, directly affecting healthcare efficiency. The study aimed to determine preparedness levels and identify factors influencing ER nurses’ ability to manage Mpox, supporting improved training, and infectious disease response. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, 66 ER nurses participated. In the quantitative phase, preparedness was assessed through a 35-item multiple-choice questionnaire. In the qualitative phase, six open-ended questions guided in-depth, semi structured interviews exploring perceptions, and experiences. Quantitative and narrative analyses were integrated to create a comprehensive understanding. Most participants were young and held bachelor’s degrees. Despite 89.4% reporting no Mpox-specific training and limited experience, the average preparedness score was relatively high (29.32/35). Thirty nurses were well-prepared; eight were unprepared. No significant differences in preparedness were observed based on age, sex, education, experience, or training. However, for place of work, preparedness levels showed significant differences. Major challenges included lack of structured training, reliance on social media, misinformation, limited institutional support, and poor infrastructure for Mpox response. Although ER nurses demonstrated moderate Mpox preparedness, the study suggests that formal education or experience alone does not ensure readiness. Strengthening institutional protocols, offering standardized training, and implementing practical simulations are essential. Addressing systemic gaps is vital to enhance ER nurses’ capabilities in managing future outbreaks effectively.
