Abstract

Purpose Statement: The purpose of the study was to describe and reflectively analyze nursing students' experiences regarding ethical dilemmas in their clinical exposure. The participants were asked the grand tour question: What were your experiences regarding ethical dilemmas during your clinical exposure as a student nurse?

Scope and Limitations: The study focused on the lived experiences of nursing students at DLSMHSI who faced ethical dilemmas during their clinical exposure. It did not offer solutions to these dilemmas and excluded first-year nursing students as well as ethical dilemmas encountered in community and geriatric home duties.

Methodology: This qualitative research study employed a phenomenological approach to explore the experiences of student nurses who encountered ethical dilemmas during their clinical exposure. The study was able to gather nine (9) participants who were interviewed. The researchers employed Colaizzi's seven-step method to conduct a thematic analysis of the data collected from the participants.

Findings After the data were analyzed, three (3) different themes emerged. The first theme is “Encountered Ethical Dilemmas”, second is “Emotional Responses to Witnessing Ethical Dilemmas” and lastly, “Ethical Challenges: Coping Strategies”. These themes consolidate the ethical challenges, emotional response and coping strategies of the participant’s experiences.
