Abstract
Objectives of the Study General: The study was primarily undertaken to determine the level of perceived impact on Mental Health among students. Specifically, this study sought to determine the following: 1. The profile of the respondents in terms of their age, gender, undergraduate program, and their year level. 2. The perceived impact of Urban Green Spaces on the mental health of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) students. 3. If there are significant differences in the perceived impact of Urban Green Spaces on the mental health of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) students when they are grouped according to their age, sex, undergraduate program, and year level.
Methodology: The study utilized a Cross-Sectional, quantitative, descriptive type of design to determine the perceived impact of Urban Green Spaces on mental health among students and to determine if there is a significant difference in the perceived impact when grouped according to age, sex, undergraduate program, and year level.
Major Findings: The following findings were drawn from this study: 1. There are more younger respondents in the study. The number of females predominates the male population with LGBTQIA+ as the least prevalent. Moreover, most respondents came from the undergraduate program of Bachelor of Science in Nursing while the least was for Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology. Lastly, majority of the respondents are from the lower year levels and only a few were from the fourth year level. lower year levels are typically more populous than the proceeding batches as first year students are the majority in the study with the fourth year students as the least populous. 2. High perceived impact of Urban Green Spaces on mental health among students is observed among the sample when it comes to the category behavior and emotions. However, while having an overall high perceived impact when it comes to thoughts. On the other hand, only a moderate perceived impact was observed from statements “My creativity such as ideation, innovation, and artistic expression becomes broader whenever I am in Urban Green Spaces” and “I can have academic focus whenever I see Urban Green Spaces, which increases my overall academic performance”. 3. Significant differences in perceived impact of Urban Green Spaces on mental health among students are only found when grouped according to gender. When grouped according to age, undergraduate program, and Year Level, results show no significant difference across the answers.
Conclusions: Based from the findings of this study: 1. Majority of the respondents were female and predominantly from the College of Nursing. Moreover, it can be deduced that first-year students represent the largest portion across year levels. 2. Urban Green Spaces had a perceived positive impact on the mental health of students regarding behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. It, therefore, indicates a substantial role in the respondents’ mental well-being. 3. The aspects of behavior, emotions, and the overall perceived impacts of Urban Green Spaces to the respondents are more diversified according to gender than the other demographics.
