Abstract

Objectives of the Study: General: The general objectives of this study was to determine the critical thinking and decision-making abilities among nursing students at DLSMHSI from first-year to fourth-year level. Specific: Specifically, this study sought to determine the following: 1. The profile of the respondents in terms of gender, and college year level. 2. The perception of critical thinking ability of BS Nursing students. 3. The perception of decision-making ability of BS Nursing students. 4. The significant differences in the perception of critical thinking ability of BS Nursing students when grouped according to gender and year level. 5. The significant differences in the level of decision-making ability of BS Nursing students when grouped according to gender and year level. 6. The significant relationship between the perception of critical thinking and decision-making abilities of the BS Nursing students.

Methodology: The study utilized a Descriptive Quantitative Research Design to determine the perception of critical thinking and decision-making ability among DLSMHSI BS Nursing Students that assist in the comparison of critical thinking and decision-making ability and find patterns or differences when they are grouped according to gender and college year level.

Major Findings: The following findings were drawn from this study: 1. Regarding gender, the sample largely consists of Female Nursing students taking up 73% of the total sample with 219 female respondents followed by 60 male respondents and finally 21 LGBTQIA+ respondents taking up 20% and 7% of the total sample size respectively. In terms of college year level, the majority of respondents came from the 1st year level with a total of 100 students which takes up 34% of the total population, followed by the third year level with 75 students, then comes second year level students totaling 64 respondents, and finally fourth year students with 61 students where they take up 25%, 21%, and 20% of the total population respectively. 2. The perceived critical thinking ability of Bachelor of Science in Nursing students is good critical thinking with an overall mean of 3.11. 3. The perceived decision-making ability of Bachelor of Science in Nursing students is deemed “good decision-making” with an overall mean of 3.20. 4. There is no significant difference in the perception of critical thinking ability according to gender. Still, there are significant differences in the perceived critical thinking ability between each year level of BS Nursing students. 5. There are no significant differences in the perceived decision-making ability of BS Nursing students based on gender. As for the difference in perceived decision-making ability between year levels, data shows that first year students of BS Nursing are significantly lower as compared to the second year, third year, and fourth year levels. 6. There is an association and correlation between critical thinking and decision-making abilities, concluding their interconnectivity.

Conclusions: From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Most of the respondents were female, officially enrolled in DLSMHSI with a course of BS in Nursing. Level One has the most numbered respondents with a count of 100 respondents. 2. The BS Nursing students from DLSMHSI perceived good critical thinking ability. Among year levels, level four has the highest mean score, and level one has the lowest mean score when it comes to critical thinking ability. 3. The BS Nursing students from DLSMHSI perceived good decision-making ability. Among the year levels, level four has the highest mean score, and level one has the lowest mean score when it comes to decision-making ability. 4. Through the findings shown, it can be concluded that there are no significant differences between gender and the perception of the BS Nursing students. 5. It can also be concluded that there are significant differences between the year level and the perception of the critical thinking and decision-making abilities of BS Nursing students. 6. The study's overall results revealed a significant relationship in the perception of BS Nursing students between critical thinking and decision-making abilities.
