Abstract

Purpose Statement This study aimed to discover the resilience strategies that psychiatric nurses employ and their effects on psychiatric nurses working at a psychiatric facility. The participants were asked the grand tour question: "What are your experiences as a psychiatric nurse in a psychiatric facility?" "Ano-ano po ang iyong karanasan bilang isang psychiatric nurse"?

Scope and Limitations The study was conducted through a virtual meeting platform to explore the resilience strategies of psychiatric nurses in a psychiatric facility and their effects on them. The inclusion criteria are the following: (a) psychiatric nurses; and (b) being currently employed in a psychiatric facility, regardless of the duration of their employment. The experiences not focusing on procedural tasks within client care but more on general experiences, personal years of experience, non-affiliation with a psychiatric facility, and demographic variables do not form part of the inclusion criteria. The study only focuses on the participant's experiences; clinical considerations are not included.

Methodology This study used a qualitative descriptive design to discover the resilience strategies that psychiatric nurses employ and their effects on psychiatric nurses working at a psychiatric facility. The researchers conducted virtual interviews with the participants, which were recorded and transcribed thoroughly. After transcription, significant meanings were identified, and themes were formed.

Findings The findings of this study resulted in a total of forty-seven (47) significant statements and the identification of four (4) themes and two (2) subthemes. The first theme is "Snake and Ladder", this generally talks about the experiences of the participants in a psychiatric facility as they experience a range of emotions. The participants mentioned their journey to the game, in the psychiatric facility, patients face many ups and downs or positive and negative, similar to climbing ladders and sliding down snakes in the game. The second theme is "Mapping the Amusement Part". This theme discusses the experiences of how psychiatric nurses navigate their journey in developing resilience. This tackled the participants' experiences in teamwork and collaboration among the team as well as assertive approaches. The participant mentioned their growth in emotional resilience and the ability to confront difficult situations without becoming overly emotional. The third theme is "The Becoming". This theme tackles the psychiatric nurses who have undergone or passed difficulties in a psychiatric facility whether it may be personal including emotionally or physically or in terms of handling clients who are stigmatized by society and labelled as 'mentally challenged individuals'. The participant mentioned their strengths both physically and mentally emphasizing that being emotionally strong is important for effectively helping patients. The fourth theme is "As you sow, so shall you reap". This theme revolves around the positive effects of resilience strategies used by the participants, as well as how they affect the patient's outcome of nursing care. The first subtheme is "As you sow" which means to plant. This shows the positive effects of the resilience strategies in the participants. Such as being compassionate in becoming resilient, effectiveness of therapeutic communication in handling patients, and fulfilling duties and responsibilities. The second subtheme is "Shall you reap". In this section, it refers to the outcome of the nurse's actions with the patient. This tackles how resilience strategies affect how the outcome of their work positively affects their patients in recovering fast and developing a sense of trust in them.
