Abstract

The study utilized a quantitative descriptive-analytical research design to determine the level of awareness and perceived effectiveness of the respondents in treating upper respiratory tract illnesses. The population of the study were the residents in Brgy. San Agustin III, City of Dasmariñas, Cavite, and the head of the household was chosen as the respondent. The respondents were (a) either male or female. (b) at least 18 years old, (c) the designated head of the family, (d) residents of Brgy. San Austin III, City of Dasmariñas, Cavite, and (e) willing to participate in the study. Moreover, the exclusion criteria included (a) students in health-related courses or licensed health professionals to prevent a uniform and biased response to the questionnaire, (b) those with physical and mental disability, and (c) other members of the household who are not the designated head of the family. Simple random sampling was used, and onsite visits were also employed to obtain the responses. Data was analyzed through the used of frequency and percentage distribution, mean, t-test, ANOVA, standard deviation, Cronbach's Alpha and Scheffe Test. Based on the results of the study, most of the respondents belong to middle adulthood, are female, and are heads of the family, with an average income of PHP 9,100 - PHP 18, 200. The results of this study showed that there is a high level of awareness of using Vitex negundo Linn (Lagundi) for treating upper respiratory tract illnesses in the community. Also, it showed that the respondents have the knowledge and confidence in using Vitex negundo Linn (Lagundi) as it is one of the approved herbal medicines by the Department of Health. The majority of those who had used it reported that it was effective in treating their symptoms.
