Abstract

The research design that was used in the study is a non-experimental, descriptive type. The respondents of the study were composed of 100 respondents, 10 from each area, who are 41 years old and above, who are able to read and write, are using either oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin injections, and have type II diabetes mellitus in selected Barangays in Imus and chosen using convenience sampling. Self-made instrument was used to determine the factors affecting the compliance to drug therapy of patients diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus. The following statistical treatment was utilized to answer the problem to test the hypothesis of the study: frequency distribution, mean, t-test and f-test. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of the patients diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus are middle to late adult, male, college graduate, earn P10,001.00 to P20,000.00 and have a family history of diabetes mellitus; 2) The patients diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus perceived that patient related factors, socio-economic factors, and socio-cultural factors have affected their compliance to drug therapy to a great extent; 3) Perceived factors affecting compliance to drug therapy of patients diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus are the same regardless of age, educational attainment, family history of diabetes mellitus and gender. Monthly family income is considered as a determinant of factors affecting compliance of respondents to drug therapy.
