Abstract
This study was conducted to help the researchers identify the causes of malnutrition among children 0-6 yrs. old at Barangay Nazareno. This study sought to answer the following: 1. What are the peoples perception regarding malnutrition? 2. What is the distribution of the degrees of malnutrition among the target group in this study? 3. What are the 3 predominant factors which causes malnutrition? Majority of the respondents perception about malnutrition are not the sign and symptoms of malnutrition but the cause of the deficiency in calories. Because respondents do not know how to detect malnutrition and who are not knowledgeable of the sign and symptoms of malnutrition. And they believed that malnutrition was brought about by not eating nutrition food and having a low income to support their family. Thus, they cannot afford to buy adequate and nutrition food. The statistical formula used in this study was: 1. frequency distribution of the perception where responses were tabulated. 2. Factor - Frequency distribution + % ranking with formula of: f/n x 100 = % wherein: f = is the frequency of the factor affecting malnutrition n = is the total number of respondents Based on the findings of our study we concluded the following: Hypothesis 1 Mothers perception about malnutrition was accepted even though it is not the manifestation of malnutrition but the deficiencies in calories. Hypothesis 2 Majority of the children belong to the first degree malnutrition was accepted. This might be because early sign of malnutrition are usually undetected by the mothers. Hypothesis 3 The 3 predominant factors affecting malnutrition also accepted. Low income is the main factor of malnutrition to support their family needs with regard to their eating habit. A low income to buy adequate and nutrition food is not the main concern of the family instead of having a food to eat in their everyday living.
