Abstract
The study deals with the influence of home environment to the lack of self-confidence of the Freshman nursing students of De La Salle University-Emilio Aguinaldo College year 1990-1991. The researchers sought to find out which of the four types of parents: overly, protective, indulgent-permissive, neglectful, authoritarian contribute to lack of self-confidence. The researchers wanted to know the effect of rejecting home atmosphere in dampening one's self-confidence. The researchers wanted to know the effect of rejecting home atmosphere in demanding one's self-confidence. The researchers used the descriptive method of research. The subjects of the study were the freshman nursing students of De La Salle University-Emilio Aguinaldo College. The Bernreuter Personality Inventory test was administered in the selection of subjects from the 1st 4 sections of first year and only high scorers on the F -C scale of the BPI comprising 85 and above percentile were selected. In a total of 152 freshman only 27 were chosen. A close ended questionnaire was constructed by the researchers and administered last October to the 27 respondents to facilitate gathering of data. The various data were gathered, presented on tables analyzed and interpreted to answer the specific questions involved in the study. It was found out that the four general types of parents contribute to lack self-confidence in varying degrees with the over-protective parents ranking #1 followed by indulgent-permissive, neglectful ranks third and the least was authoritarian. Rejecting home atmosphere has its own share to lack of trust in one self with verbal punishment as the most common trait of parents in rejecting home environment contributing to lack of self-confidence. Finally a gist of the research is written together with the findings, conclusion and recommendations concerning the study. Thus, the home plays an important role in the development of a sense of mistrust in one self. All four types of parents - overly protective, indulgent permissive, neglectful, authoritarian contribute to lack of self-confidence in varying degrees. Characteristic of a specific type do not occur singly at a parent. They may come in combination but the most dominant traits are those of the overly protective type followed by the indulgent permissive, then by the neglectful and lastly the authoritarian. Although they may come in combination, specific traits of a specific type will always be the most dominant and observable. Rejecting home environment has its own share in the development of a sense of mistrust in oneself. This type of home climate can retard and hinder development of a healthy personality. It was found out that too much reluctance on the part of the parent and making few demands contribute to a degree in lack of self-confidence. Development of lack of self-confidence largely depend on home environment where parent-child relationship prevail. Home plays a vital role in the development of a sense of mistrust in oneself.
