Abstract
This study is about time spent on professional nursing responsibilities and non-professional nursing responsibilities of the staff nurses working on the different shift of De La Salle University Medical Center. The research determined the amount of time spent on both responsibilities by the staff nurse. It was then that there is a significant difference on time spent between the two categories. the following findings: By point estimation, this means that a single value to estimate the true amount of time spent by a nurse doing both responsibilities, it can be said that a nurse spent 10202.8333 seconds or 2 hours and 83 minutes doing non-professional responsibilities and 18919.3333 seconds or 5 hours and 23 minutes doing a professional nursing responsibilities. By interval estimation, this means that the estimate amount may be considered to lie, 5241.7978 seconds 15163.8688 seconds or 1 hour 4 minutes to 4 hours and 21 minutes doing non-professional nursing responsibilities and 14271.6350 to 23567.0316 seconds or 1 hour 4 minutes to 4 hours and 21 minutes doing non-professional nursing responsibilities and 14271.6350 to 23567.0316 seconds or 3 hours and 96 minutes to 6 hours and 54 minutes doing professional nursing responsibilities. Utilizing T-test method for the significant difference of both categories it was found out that since t computed which is 9.4655 is greater than the t-table which is 2.042 at t 34. 0.05 level of confidence we reject the null hypothesis, thus accepting that there is significant difference between non-professional and professional nursing responsibilities. In view of the findings, the researchers concluded that there is significant difference spent between professional nursing responsibilities and non-professional nursing responsibilities. The average time that a nurse spebt doing her professional responsibilities 18919.3333 seconds or 5 hours and 25 minutes while 10202.8333 seconds or 2 hours and 83 minutes were spent for non-professional nursing responsibilities. From this finding, though staff nurses performed professional nursing responsibilities they also performed non-professional nursing responsibilities like securing supplies for patient care, going to pharmacy or laboratory. These activities could have been delegated to other discipline like nurses aides or orderlies. With this more time can be given to patient resulting to quality nursing care.
