Abstract

Good quality sleep is an essential factor that contributes to the health and wellbeing of every individual. However, students commonly engage in voluntary sleep deprivation due to their aspiration for academic and social success. The present study aimed to determine the correlation between sleep quality and overall health among selected SHSSHS students of DLSMHSI in order to provide a greater picture of how the sleep quality of students associates with their health. The suggestions of the students on how to improve sleep quality were also gathered to provide a framework for future plans and strategies. This mixed method research study utilized a research questionnaire with 100 SHSSHS students in DLSMHSI, selected through stratified random sampling. The research questionnaire utilized the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in assessing the sleep quality, the Overall Health Questionnaire (OHQ) in assessing health and inserted an open-ended question for the suggestions. The results of the study showed that the SHSSHS students experience a fair quality of sleep every night and were very healthy in terms of their overall health. Through analysis, the conclusion that there is a significant correlation between the sleep quality and overall health of the SHSSHS students was drawn. Additionally, the students mostly suggested sleep routine-related interventions and strategies in improving the quality of sleep which provided the perception of the students for future plans and strategies.
